How Can We Use The iPad for Serious Music Creation?

As of last night the TV ad is out for the new iPad, there's a lot of questions about the iPad and how it can be used in different industries, but the million dollar question for us guys is how can we use it?

Things that will need to be cleared up first are:

  • Is there going to be an interface to get audio and MIDI in and out the iPad? If not then that's killed it, unless of course you want to wifi audio in and out, but that would be laborious at best and crap at worst.
  • How powerful the Apps will be. If I was Apple I'd be porting an iPad version of Logic across and if I was Reaper, whose entire desktop version weighs in at a tiny 7mb, I'd be cracking on with that now. If I was AVID I'd be throwing everything I could at doing something before everyone else has made a land-grab for the iPad.

People may want to dimiss the impact of the iPad, but it's perhaps the same people who dimissed the iPhone. Now the people running the mobile phone party before the iPhone, like Nokia and Sony Ericcson, are trying to get their name on the guest list! There are no dead certs when it comes to market leaders any more.

I'm excited about the possibilty of editing audio and MIDI on an iPad.

As yet the jury is out, but let's see what happens, this could be very exciting.

Without even reading your post I have the answer - Beat it with a stick!! Stupid giant iphone without the phone. So over Apple's overpriced garbage.

However, if someone can turn it into a Lemur for 20% of the price, ok, I might buy it.

Sorry for the Apple-rage. ;-)

Pity you didn't read it, a lot of people said the iPhone was a joke, now a billion dollar cash cow joke for Apple.

Just because people buy something, doesn't mean it's a great product. I did read it, Russ! I read every post..I love your blog, don't take the prior comment personally. I just think that Apple users tend to spend more on form than function. But look, this isn't a Mac/PC battle, so I will chill.

Bottom line is, if it can enhance my composition techniques and do something that no other product can do more cheaply, I'm a convert!

What's even more upsetting is Apple ignoring firewire as an important piece of hardware. See there newest laptops and you have to agree!

We'll see! I'm open to being proven wrong. They just haven't done it yet.

Also, I think Android is a much more impressive OS and it's open which should lead to a lot more innovation. If Apple had a more community-driven approach, I think they'd get my vote.

I have the latest 13" MacBook Pro which has Firewire so I'm not sure what you're talking about?
